The VanDusen Festival of Lights, Welcome to the Night Garden!

The VanDusen Festival of Lights opened this weekend to much celebration! This annual Christmas festival brings 1.4 million twinkling lights and thousands of patrons together to indulge their inner child. Strolling through a fantasyland, creating a spark a of creativity and wonder! Here, we celebrating the joys of the holiday season!

This place truly is a winter wonderland.

I am incredibly impressed with the gardens light arrangements. They do a fantastic job of landscaping the lights. Using creative up lighting and lots and lots of strands of lights, they have sculpted a garden complete with blooms big and small. An illuminated garden, skillfully designed and well thought out. Straying away from any animated lit characters or blow up Santa’s.

Here your imagination is encouraged to play!

The light show on Livingstone lake was reminiscent of a well timed firework display. Each moment catching your breath with it’s beauty and unexpected charm! I enjoyed taking stills of the show. Catching each burst of colour as they etched themselves across the frozen pallet below.

The music was fantastic! The holiday classics blended well with more modern hits from the show ‘Glee’. My daughter was swinging in the isles as we watched the lake lights dance to the music!

The kids love visiting the garden at Christmas! They spent time in the sled hitting all the buttons to make the Sparkling Spruce shine in centre court. The giggled with joy as they watched the miniature train make it rounds, and they even had some one-on-one time with the big man himself! All said it made for an enchanting evening that my kids are still talking about!

Creating treasured memories. A gift from the garden.

The Festival of Lights is on until January 2nd, 2012.  Open every night except Christmas, from 430-9pm. Tickets can be purchased at the door, but I recommend picking them up in advance, and skipping the long line!

  1. Love the slide show at the bottom – great shots.

    • Thank you Nancy. I really enjoyed taking pictures in the garden on Friday night. The icy lake and the large full moon, made for some excellent conditions!

Hey just wondering if the whole light area is wheelchair friendly (ie paved walkway) or not?

    • Hi Kristen! Yes, the majority of the route is wheelchair accessible. We went with my Mother in law who is in a wheelchair, and had no trouble with the terrain. That said, there are certain areas where your access is limited. For example there is only one way to enter and exit the rose garden in a chair, which means if you want to go to the perennial garden, you have to go the long way to get there. We didn’t find it an issue at all. Every direction is well lit and interesting.
