August Garden Calendar: Blueberries, Zimsculpt & an Inspiration Garden


Hi all! I got word from Juliana of Juliana’s Blueberries that her U-Pick is once again open for business! So if your in the tri-cities area and are craving some delicious local blueberries, make sure to stop on by Juliana’s Blueberry Farm on Devon Rd (off Prairie ave. in PoCo) or contact her at 604-468-8988. If your looking for something to do this weekend VanDusen Botanical Gardens is hosting Zimsculpt, an exhibit of stone sculptures from Zimbabwe. The VanDusen exhibit will showcase many pieces by Zimbabwe’s pre-eminent sculptor, Dominic Benhura. This exhibit starts this Friday, August 13 running through until September 26, 2010. Make sure to check it out!
Also about town this month Coquitlam’s inspiration garden is hosting a variety of kid friendly workshops in the garden. Check out their site for more information and to register for the classes.

Come learn How to extend Your Vegetable Season into Fall & Winter and have fresh vegetables all year long. Join our special speaker, Arzeena Harmir, the Coordinator from the Richmond Food Security Society as she shares the best varieties to grow and when to plant in order to have a fall/winter harvest.

Children’s Workshop: Learn About Beneficial Bugs!-5 yrs-10 yrs. (Parent Participation required for 8 yrs & under)

Children can learn about which bugs are good for the garden and can learn what they can do to attract them to the garden. Children will paint their own pot and plant up with a plant to attract beneficial bugs! Presented by Living Art.

Children’s Workshop: Planting Seeds- 5yrs-10 yrs (Parent Participation Required for 8 yrs & under)

Children will learn about seeds and plant their own in a pot to take home! All supplies included.

Saturday, August 21 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. $10.00

Children’s Workshop: Create An UnderSea Garden! 5 yrs-10yrs (Parent Participation required for 8 & under)

Children will create their own Undersea Garden with easy care, drought tolerant plants that resemble marine life in the ocean!

Saturday, August 21 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. $10.00

Children’s Workshop: Sensory Walk in the Garden-3yrs-8yrs (Parent participation is required)

Children, ages 3-8, are taken on a tour around the Inspiration Garden and will explore and learn about the garden through their senses. Children will plant up a small potted container to take home.

Sedums and Succulents – 19 years & up

Learn how to prepare, plant and maintain your sedums and succulents! All supplies required included. Participants will create and take home their own containers. Click to register!

Pesticide Free Lawn & Garden Care-15 yrs & up

Learn how to maintain a healthy lawn & garden without the use of toxic chemicals and techniques to decrease the need for fertilizers while reducing competition for weeds.

    There are always some great classes at your neck of the woods. I have to find a upick blueberry place near us. I love blueberries.
